Native American

I Am a Native American

The whole point of the civil rights movement was to make skin color irrelevant.  Wouldn’t matter if your hue was light or dark, wasn’t that the goal?  Well, we’re there...except that many don’t want to be.  Many today cling to their race as if their personal identity depended on it.  It ought to be completely irrelevant what color is your skin.  I am not my skin color; are you?

Meanwhile all of us are frequently required to declare, officially and for the record, our race.  Why in hell are we asked that?  Actually, I think it’s Washington, D.C. that requires it, not Hell, but the two have a lot in common.  Anyway, since my parents and I were born and raised here in the USA, am I not an American?   That option isn’t on the checklist; the closest thing to it is Native American.  And why not?  By my definition, I really am.  Most of you are, too, I’ll bet.

A skin color-blind native American: that’s the me I want to be.  How about you?

  1. Is this a good time to mention Princess Bright Star? Because I'm not ready to let that go yet. I wish they put a checkbox for royalty.

I'm with you though. I think heritage is wonderful, but we should celebrate all cultures, not just the ones we consider "ours".
